My writing approach - on word count and lengthSince I've been looking into how writers do commissions, I've seen a lot of authors charge per word.
While that's fine if that is what works for them, I myself have a problem with that approach, and I'm fully aware it has to do with my writing style as well.
Let me explain:
My writing style is heavily influenced by movies and TV. In screenwriting there is this a rule for setting up scenes - the same rule I try to follow when I write: Late in - early out.
This means you try to enter the scene where something happens in the latest possible moment, and leave the scene after the event in the earliest possible moment. This technique is there to keep tension high and keep the audience engaged. It increases pacing and removes unnecessary fill.
I try to stick to this myself, my writing is basically describing scenes and cutting from scene to scene. I try to not write descriptive paragraphs in between, as I think it is better to start the next scene and have the reader discover what hap

To play Baby Game, you will need to set up the included game board, and arrange the included game pieces. Included with your Baby Game 3rd Edition, you have:
1 Game Board
8 Baby Game Pieces
50 Green STAR Cards
50 Blue STAR Cards
50 Pink STAR Cards
50 Yellow STAR Cards
1 6-sided die
After setting up the game board, place each deck of color-coordinated “STAR” cards on their appropriate places on the board. Each player must select a game piece, and place it on the “START” space to initiate game play. Once begun, the game CANNOT end until one player has reached the “WINNER!” space. At the start of the game, it is customary, though not required for players to select one STAR card of their choosing. New players are encouraged to take 2 STAR cards from opposite colors.
To begin game play, select a player to go first. Each player in turn will roll the die, and advance their game piece along the route of the board towards the “WINNER!” space. If a player lands on a STAR space, they must select a STAR card of the corresponding color. If a player lands on a yellow arrow, the player will roll again to advance further. If a player lands on a red arrow, the player must roll again to go back. If a player lands on a red “X” space, they lose their next turn.
STAR cards of all colors are to be read aloud. Some will indicate the player should keep the card, others may be returned to the deck as directed. Bonuses and penalties take effect immediately, and their duration varies based on the card selected.
During game-play, standard spaces will indicate passage of time. Results and effects of these will vary from player to player based on biology, genetics, previous breeding activity, and STAR card bonuses/penalties.
When a player has reached the “WINNER!” spot, that player is declared winner of the Baby Game. Flip this card over for “WINNER!” options, allowing the winner to determine if the effects of Baby Game will be kept or reset to pre-game conditions. Winner may also create a new STAR card for future players.
Remember, the Baby Game is all in good fun. Some mothers may find the game distressing at first, but this is normal, especially if they are unaccustomed to performing their key biological function. Satisfaction with the Baby Game is guaranteed!

The next few days became a whirlwind for Daniel. The ship, once a carefree place where a few monitors needed to be checked, and a few reports filled out had become a tempest of activity for him. Keeping up with his future wife and child's needs was no easy task he discovered.
Roxi's appetite grew from oversized to nearly insatiable- for both food and pleasure. Daniel was keen to satisfy both whenever she pleased, finding the abundance of her body gave plenty to him in return for his efforts. Her belly grew noticeably larger with each new day, as she flaunted her new curves and additions naked around the. ship. Daniel loved it- they would wake up together, and spend virtually all of their time together, just them and the baby. All the same, at the rate Roxi was growing, Daniel knew there couldn't be much time left before she would go into labor, and their first child would be born, and the prospect of delivering a baby on a space ship frightened him somewhat, though both Roxi and the computer assured him all was well.
All through the joy and bliss he was still surprised to find how much she had changed- not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Though her sharp sarcastic wit was intact, it was somewhat dulled by pregnancy hormones, and she'd often be left searching for words when an errant kick from the baby or one of the near-constant waves of hormones disrupted her. She drifted off topic and had difficulty focusing on intensive tasks- what few there were- save for tending to herself and her baby. She was now fixated on her new baby, her body, and her life as a baby-maker for Daniel. None of this bothered him, nor her- both were happier now than they had ever been, and they had no plans to stop.
“When the baby comes.” She began, leaning on him as they watched another terrible movie. “I want another one, as fast as you can give me one.” she said.
“I'm sure that can be arranged.” Daniel said.
“It's like, I know my... my...” she trailed off. “My, like, window of...” she paused again.
“Fertility?” he offered.
“Yes, that's it. My fertility window- I know it, and I'll know when it's best to do it.” she said.
“I bet I'll have to beg or even bribe you to have sex with me after this is all over.” Daniel chuckled, stroking her belly again.
Roxi nestled into him a little more with a smile. “My, um... my legs are always open for you.” she said.
“Well, for two of us.” Daniel said, placing his hand on her belly.
“For baby.” she said with a smile.
“Babies.” Daniel said with a wink, and she nestled herself against him even closer, and before long he noticed she had drifted off to sleep. Rather than wake her, he settled back in the sofa himself somewhat, and before long, Daniel had fallen asleep too.
A computerized chime woke Daniel, and he looked over to the wall where the computer had some sort of notification. It wasn't terribly important, as it only beeped once- and only loud enough to wake Daniel. He found that Roxi had become a very deep sleeper since her pregnant state had come to be- though he imagined her body was working very hard to keep her going despite the added weight, and developing a rather large baby inside of her. He moved slightly, and though she stirred a little, she did not wake. He looked down at her, and how she had come to lay on the couch, and he marveled at her.
She had gotten even bigger overnight. Her belly, once just big, was now truly enormous- jutting off her body quite a ways, and now holding an unusual, almost torpedo-like shape. He moved his hand over, and placed it on her belly.
He was hit with a number of sensations- warmth being the first. Roxi's body had grown increasingly warm to the touch, almost cozy- he wondered if her aversion to clothes was more for comfort and climate than whatever hormone-induced logic she had talked about earlier. The next sensation he was struck with was movement. The baby within her was very receptive to touch- moving and jostling more and more as it got bigger within Roxi's womb. He thought it was great fun, feeling his unborn child move about inside of her- though he tempered his desires to excite the baby too much. He knew the baby's constant moving, kicking, and general thrashing about in her made her life more uncomfortable, but she never complained about it. He couldn't imagine carrying something that big and unruly on his body- the fact she wanted to carry them at all was a wonder to him, and one he was thankful for.
Finally, he felt how firm it was. Her belly had been firm from the onset- the pressure in her womb pushing her skin to become taut like a drum, but now it felt even more so- he ran his hand down her belly, pausing at the spot where her belly button had become a tiny raised mound itself- it's original shape forfeited 2 days ago. From what Daniel had read, if they kept up the pace they had agreed on, some of the changes she'd incurred could become permanent. Daniel wondered if she'd thought about that, and if that had given her pause or made her horny again.
He ran his hand across her belly a few more times, before moving his other hand over, connecting with one of her breasts. They too had grown somewhat, and Dan could tell she was full up again- her nipples both began to drip as soon as his hand made contact, and refused to stop.
“Hey, Roxi, wake up.” Daniel whispered to her with a smile.
“Uh... what?” she said, in a disoriented muffle as she came to.
“You're naked, so you can get all sorts of wet, but I don't want to get all wet just yet.” Daniel chuckled. She rose off him with a groan, running her hands along her sides, before moving them to the small of her back, then snapping them to her belly to gently stroke the sides again.
“Got bigger in the night.” she said, matter-of-factly.
“Looks that way.” Daniel said, leaning over to kiss her head.
“The pressure is really... really intense.” she said.
“Your belly?” Daniel asked.
“Not so much there, my breasts.” she said with a sigh, stroking them, causing them to dribble milk more readilly.
“Want me to rub them?” Daniel asked with a sly smile.
“That'll take a long time. I don't even know what kind of bra would fit me.” she said, cupping her breasts with her hands.
“Well, if you have the baby, the baby will take care of all of that.” Daniel said.
“Who knows how long that will be?” she said, shaking her head.
“Can't be too long now.” Daniel said, stroking her belly some more, his hands moving towards the lower areas, leaving her to caress the top.
“I don't know what to think Dan- it feels wonderful, and I don't want it to end, but at the same time I can't wait until I get to give birth. I'm a little nervous, but I'm so pumped on hormones, I don't care.” she said with a smile.
“Roxi, you are something else, you know that?” Daniel said.
“Well, I figured that.” she said, stroking her belly again, before she stood up off the sofa.
“What are you doing today?” Daniel asked.
“I'm going to take a shower, try to get more of this milk out of me without making too big of a mess, and then get back to my job.” she said with a wink.
“Which one?” Daniel asked.
“The one I'm doing for us.” she said, stroking her belly again, before giving him a wink.
“Keep up the good work, make that baby the best baby it can be!” Daniel said with a chuckle. “I only work with the very best baby-makers!” Daniel exclaimed in a joking manner.
“Of course, boss!” she said with a giggle, before she departed the room.
Daniel rose, and went to the computer terminal, checking the display. “Invalid course correction.” he read aloud. “Great, gotta do everything for the computer these days.” Daniel said, making his way to the bridge.
Once there, he discovered the ship's automatic pilot had put them somewhat off course from his projected path- nothing serious though, so he left it. So it added another day onto their voyage, who was counting at this rate? In order to head it off, he went into the chart system, and began correcting some of their headings to at the very least avoid any major maneuvering for a week or so, leaving the ship on a wide, steady course. Then, he heard her say it.
“Dan! Dan! It's coming!” she howled. He could hear her from the bridge. He bolted out of his seat, and ran to their bedroom, finding her in the tiny restroom, squatting in the still-running shower in a large puddle of discolored liquid of some sort. He assumed it was her broken water, but was surprised to find it was a strange blue color, and a wave of fright washed over him- she'd been pregnant for a few days now- what else could the strange fuel have done to the baby? He helped her up, panting, and led her to the bed, where she went straight to breathing through contractions.
“It'll be alright.” Daniel said, gently spreading her legs, as she breathed rather rhythmically, her eyes unfocused as she worked on her natural and fundamental task. Her body was glistening from the water of the shower, further still by the streaks of milk that was still dripping out of her at a steady pace.
“I just, I just need to check...” Daniel said, delicately sliding his hand up inside of her vagina, feeling to see if she'd dilated any. He'd read on how to do it, and hoped he was doing it right. His fingers found what he thought to be the opening the computer had described, and it seemed wide enough he could have slid his hand further inside if he dared, so he surmised she must be ready.
“You feel ready.” he said, encouragingly.
“I need to push.” Roxi said, still breathing hard.
“Push. You can do it.” Daniel said, moving in close to her alongside the bed.
“RGH!” she exclaimed, and her belly visibly shifted.
“Push!” Daniel exclaimed. He couldn't believe it- this was it!
She continued to labor, pushing, struggling against the baby for nearly an hour. Daniel moved into a more supportive role, stroking and massaging her as he dared, all while serving as a cheerleader of sorts. She would grunt, he would call for her to push, and so it went.
“I, ugh!” Roxi began, bearing down hard, as Daniel watched the head of his child begin to push out of it's mother- pushing her vaginal opening outwards a bit, before slipping back inside a short ways.
“You're almost there Roxi! Push!” Daniel cheered.
“I... am... so... tired...” she said between breaths.
“I know you are, just a few more pushes, and it'll be over, the baby will be out!” Daniel exclaimed.
“I... URF!” she grunted, straining against her passenger, pushing the head nearly free from her vagina. Daniel looked at the top of the baby's head, and he was somewhat unnerved that the baby seemed to be dyed a dull shade of blue, but he held out hope it was just that the baby had been basting in her supercharged blue womb fluids.
“Push Roxi! Push!” he called.
She grunted again, and then gasped, and the baby seemed to lurch out of her, the head sliding out, followed by the shoulders sliding out of her vagina. Daniel cautiously collected the baby, pulling it so that it slid free from it's mother, a rather thick umbilical cord trailing along after.
“She's beautiful.” Daniel peeped.
“Baby.” Roxi said, holding up one hand weakly, to which Daniel gently moved the baby to her, where he settled the baby onto her chest. The baby made a few soft cries, but fell quickly silent- likely exhausted from the same ordeal Roxi had gone through.
“Why is the baby blue?” Roxi asked, still panting.
“Must be from the fuel.” Daniel said. “It made her grow crazy fast and crazy big- wow. Seriously, I can't believe you got her out of your vagina.” he added.
“I feel like I just got split in two.” Roxi said, gently maneuvering the baby to her right breast, where the baby immediately latched on and began to greedily nurse. “Oh that feels good...” she sighed.
“So, that was wild.” Daniel said, stroking Roxi's hair back out of her face somewhat, before leaning in for a kiss. “Mom.” he added.
“Dad.” she said, pressing her eyes shut with a smile.
“So...” Daniel said, looking her over somewhat. “You sure you want to go through that again?” he asked with a chuckle.
There was a moment of silence, and Daniel thought she might have drifted off to sleep.
“I want as many babies as you can give me...” she said, rather resolutely.
“Well, that can be arranged once we've got the hang of this one.” Daniel said, still taking in all that had happened.
“Next time though...” Roxi said, opening her eyes to give him a seductive look. “I think I'm going to go wade at the top of the stairs. If a little bit of that fuel can give me all of this...” she said, gesturing to both herself and her sleeping baby. “...what will a bunch do?” she asked.
Daniel smiled at the thought of that.
“Ralph?” a man in a uniform said, walking into the communication room. “What is all this?” he demanded, a scowl on his face.
“Commander Walsh, sir, I don't understand your inquiry?” the man at the computer station said.
“Did you even read this, or were you stargazing again? Look at this report you checked in on that ship that's coming in today.” he said, flashing it back at him.
“It's just an overdue freighter sir. Engine trouble and a damaged compressed cargo container delayed them by several additional months.” Ralph said, adjusting his glasses.
“I see that.” Commander Walsh said, shaking his head. “Did you even look at the declared passenger log?” he said, sounding rather in disbelief.
“If I recall correctly...” Ralph said, taking the report from the Commander. “...It lists 2 adults, Roxi Belland, and Daniel Sailor, both crew.” he said, looking up at Commander Walsh with a puzzled expression.
“Did you notice they checked the 'infants' box too?” Commander Walsh said.
“Yes, I see that, again not unusual for an extended voyage from one of these freewheeling companies, sir.” Ralph said, still seeming perplexed.
“The number section says 'a lot' instead of a number.” Commander Walsh said, contorting his face into a scowl.
“I understand the report is inaccurate in that regard, but I presumed it was a clerical error by the crew, and would be amended when they docked, sir.” Ralph said.
“Listen Ralph-” Commander Walsh said. “The navy has been on my tail all month since that rouge transport came in. They are checking everything. You mess up, I get it- and then YOU'LL get it? Got it!?” Commander Walsh shouted.
“Um, yes sir.” Ralph said, taken by surprise at this outburst.
“Now, when that ship comes in, you and Stacey are going to go over there, and do a head count on everyone that is going to set foot on this station? Got it?” Commander Walsh said.
“Of course sir, it was my intention to correct any inaccuracies when they reached us.” Ralph said, trying to calm the Commander. “This is just a mistake on the form, I'm sure there is nothing unusual about this ship at all sir. Rest easy.” Ralph said.
“For your sake Ralph, it better be!” Commander Walsh said, before he left the room in a huff.
Ralph replaced his headset on his head, and moved over to the row of windows on the far wall looking out over the vast expanse of space- and there in the distance, just beyond the harbor limits, was an older freighter limping in. “So much fuss over one unremarkable ship...” Ralph said, checking his watch to see what time it was likely to finally drift in, and when he'd have to be ready to inspect it.
“This is going to be easy.” Ralph said, turning to return to his workstation.
